Job summary

CSE is looking for Data Analysts and Data Scientists who are eager to apply their skills to real-world cyber defence and intelligence challenges. As part of our mission, we track cyberthreats worldwide, monitor Government of Canada networks to detect and mitigate cyberthreats, and protect critical government information. Data Analysts and Data Scientists at CSE play a crucial role in turning complex data into meaningful insights and actionable intelligence.

Your role at CSE:

As a Data Analyst you will:

  • Shape raw data into meaningful insights by conducting data validation, quality control, and cleaning.
  • Develop and evolve Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes and data models.
  • Create data processing pipelines to analyze disparate multi-source data.
  • Prepare technical documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure data requirements are met for operational reports, dashboards and ad hoc requests.

As a Data Scientist you will:

  • Model real world problems to forecast future outcomes.
  • Apply and develop advanced machine learning techniques.
  • Implement algorithms and develop efficient solutions.
  • Communicate analytical results in compelling and visual ways.
  • Mentor others in data science and machine learning.

Location

The majority of our jobs are in Ottawa, Ontario. CSE has two accessible facilities. Flexible work arrangements, including telework for a portion of the work week, may be possible.

Essential qualifications

In order to be considered, your cover letter must clearly explain how you meet the following education and experience requirements.

Education

You must have either one of the following:

  • A university degree that includes coursework in statistics or computing in a field related to the position, such as (but not limited to) Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, and Applied Science.
  • An acceptable combination of education (professional certification) in a field related to the position (as above), and relevant experience.

Note: The educational program must be recognized in Canada, and you must be able to provide proof of education credentials. Students graduating within the next twelve months are eligible to apply.

Experience

Recent* experience in the following:

  • Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) activities including cleaning, transforming, ingesting and processing large, varied structured and unstructured data.
  • Scripting or programming in at least one open-source programming language (e.g. Python) or a statistical software package (e.g. R).
  • Collaborating with management, software tool developers and software tool users.
  • Conducting data analysis and sharing insights compelling communications in visual, verbal and written forms.

*Note: For the purposes of this hiring process, “recent” is defined as experience having normally been acquired within the last five (5) years.

Asset education

A Masters or PhD degree** in a field related to the position, such as (but not limited to) Physics, Math, Engineering, Economics, Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or Applied Science.

Asset experience

  • Significant background in software programming or scripting.
  • Recent Experience in developing and applying computational algorithms and statistical methods to find patterns and model, and predict relationships in large, diverse and evolving data sets.
  • Recent experience in applying and improving machine learning techniques.

Note: For the purposes of this hiring process, “recent” is defined as experience having normally been acquired within the last five years. “Significant” is defined as depth and breadth normally associated with three (3) to five (5) years of experience.
